Belt 1 Yellow Belt - Initiation Phase

Jeet Kune Do Concepts

  • 5 ways of attack
  • SDA
  • Any one Attack done with no preparatory motions or follow ups.
  • Example: Eye Jab
  • ABC
  • Stringing together several SDAs all with the intention of hitting.
  • Example: Jab, Cross, Hook
  • HIA
  • Seizing a weapon of your opponent while attacking. Usually to create an opening, prevent a counterattack, or to control.
  • Example: Pac Sao Eye Jab, or Outside Reap
  • PIA
  • Faking an attack to one area in order to create an opening on your opponent and then capitalizing on that opening.
  •  Example: Faking a Groin Kick to expose the eyes for an eye jab.
  • ABD
  • Creating an opportunity of attack on your person to draw out a predictable response from your opponent and then capitalizing on that response.
  • Example: Dropping the lead hand to d9raw out the Cross, and then executing Defense Against a Cross.
  • Using No Way as Way
  • No One Style has all the answers, so we pull from all styles. We keep what works best, and discard what is useless.
  • Center Line
  • An Imaginary line that runs down the center of your body and projects forward.
  • Keep your opponent on your centerline.
  • Stay off your opponent's centerline.
  • Occupy your own centerline so your opponent cannot strike you in a straight line.
  • Distance Management for Punch Protection
  • You want to be all the way out (so far away they can't hit you) or all the way in (so close you can Headbutt, Knee, Elbow, and Eye Gouge)
  • The person who Manages the Distance, Manages the Damage.
  • 5 signs of a potentially Abusive Partner.
  • Controlling Behaviors
  • Isolating you from friends and family
  • Showing up unannounced at an inappropriate time (I.e., late at night, in the middle of your shift at work)
  • A history of violence
  • Don’t assume you're an exception. Violent people tend to be violent to everyone.
  • Animal Abuse
  • Simply put, it's one of the most common behaviors in serial killers
  • Playing the Victim
  • It's a powerful tool of manipulation. Not only are they never in the wrong, but they are always already under attack.
  • Property Destruction
  • It is not uncommon for a 13-year-old boy to put his fist through a wall. It is not normal for a 30-year-old man to do so. A person who cannot Control their fists is a dangerous person to be around.

Self Defense Techniques

Throws

  • Major Outside Reap - O Soto Gari
  • Major Hip Toss - O Goshi

Vs Right Haymaker

  1. Japanese Shield
  2. Step to 12:00 while executing a Left Shield Block while simultaneously executing a right eye jab. End the Technique with a Major Outside Reap (O Soto Gari)

Vs. Orthodox Jab

  1. Chinese Sword
  2. Step back with the left foot and do a right inward block palm facing your body.  Then step forward with your right foot while executing a right eye jab, follow that up with a left Kenpo elbow.
  • Note: This can also be a defense against a Single Lapel Grab, or Single-Handed Choke. Therefore, be sure to practice it against those attacks as well.
  1.  Delayed Sword
  2.  Step back with the left foot bringing the right foot into the cat stance with an inward block palm facing you.  Snap kick to the groin then a step forward followed by shuto to the neck and a palm strike.
  • Note: This can also be a defense against a Single Lapel Grab, or Single-Handed Choke. Therefore, be sure to practice it against those attacks as well.

Vs Right Snap Kick

  1. Blocking the Kick
  2. There are 3 defenses against kicks (listed below). They all come from a southpaw stance and end with a Right eye jab, and then a left sandwich elbow.
  3. Right knee shield.
  4. Left Oblique Kick
  5. Right Side Kick
  • *Note: According to SDS Kenpo, you NEVER defend a low kick with your arms. Your hands should stay above your collarbone. The Tracy Kenpo version is strictly historical and has been rejected by most modern MMA schools. The SDS Kenpo blocking system is the one used most widely today.

Vs Two Hand Choke or Double Lapel Grab

  1. Knee of Vengeance
  2. Step your right foot forward into a forward bow as you zombie both hands in one at a time. Establish a Thai clench. Then, while snapping down on their head, deliver a left knee to their groin. After your knee, place your left foot down to 10:00 while overhooking their right arm with your left. Finish with an outside reap.

  • Note This technique can also be a defense against a Muay Thai Clinch. Therefore, be sure to practice it against those attacks as well.
  1. Fang of the Cobra
  2. Bring your left arm across both of the hands of the assailant grabbing your lapel or choking you and step back with the left foot causing your body to turn as you deliver a tiger's mouth to the throat (done by using the area between the spread thumb and fingers).  Follow that up with an eagle claw to the throat.

Vs Rear Forearm Choke

  1. Japanese Stranglehold
  2. Bring your hands up crossing your wrists into an X to protect your throat.
  3. Bring your hands up to grasp the assailants' choking arm.  Lift your right foot up with the toe facing 3:00 and drive down onto the assailant's foot using their shin as a guide for placement.  Step right to 3:00 into a horse stance with both feet facing forward.  Drive a left ”Yes Elbow” back into the assailant's midsection and then strike with a right Bottom Fist to the groin. Then shift into an orthodox cat stance and with the right-hand reach across your body to strike the assailant in the eyes.
  4.  In this technique you are in a choke hold with your left arm captured behind your back.  Grab the assailant’s choking arm and lift your right foot up with the toe facing 3pm and drive down onto the assailant's foot using their shin as a guide for placement.  Step left into a horse stance with both feet facing forward.  Drive the Right “Yes Elbow” back into the assailant's midsection and then strike with a right Hammer Fist to the groin (optional Testicle crush) followed by a right Reverse Elbow to the assailant's face.

Vs Right Flank, Right Shoulder Grab

  1. Returning Dragon
  2. *Re-Grab the assailants' arm from the inside using your right hand and use them for balance as you turn counterclockwise to face 9:00, employing a right shoulder roll to protect your face.  Then deliver a Right Back Kick with to their ribs and then immediately down to the knee (2 kicks in total, one to the ribs, and then to the knee) before putting the foot used to kick back down. Cross step away after the sidekick.
  • Note: This is taught as a defense against someone’s hand on your shoulder while standing at your right side.

Vs Wrist Grabs

  1. Pushing the circle* (Same Side Wrist Grab)
  2. **: The assailant grabs your right wrist with their left hand. Take a right step forward while bringing your right elbow up in an uppercut elbow motion to break the grip (this motion is not an attack), then do a Spear Elbow into the assailant's chest.  This elbow should strike and drive with forward and downward pressure.  It should move the assailant and hurt a LOT!
  3. The assailant grabs your right wrist with their left hand. You try Pushing the Circle A, but this time the assailant resists, So you bring your right arm across your body to break their grip which chambers that arm.  You then deliver a right shuto.
  • *Note 1:  The Tracy system reserves Pushing the Circle for the 7th belt, 2nd Brown, and the SDS system has it here in Yellow Belt.
  • **Note 2: This technique used to be more similar to the Tracy Kenpo variations, utilizing the counterclockwise arm rotation. However, after much research, Jerry Smith found that the “Uppercut elbow” variation was more effective.
